SPRING BABIES

Most Recent / February 26, 2023

Although it certainly doesn't look or feel like it right now, we've heard spring is around the corner.

Which for us means we are deep into the beginning of a very busy time of year.

Garden planning for wedding florals, organizing flower workshops, expanding on our pasture raised chicken, and trying to decide which areas to grow and where to slow it down.

But while this is all happening on the back end, we are also moving closer to calving season. Which in my opinion, is both the most wonderful, as well as stressful time of year. Spring babies everywhere, but...

We never quite know when they will arrive.

The Bull

Billy the Bull visited last July until September.  Billy was on loan from our friends Gail and Mike, two of the most impressive farmers I've ever met. Who also kindly informed us that his name is actually Charlie. Gail is so lovely that she assured me that Billy was also a great name for him.

Gail and Mike are who we purchased our original three cows from.

Big momma, although her real name is Mabel (corrected by Gail again). Two for two on cow names.

Ruby(shes red) très original.

And Gail, who we named after farmer Gail. Both of which are the no nonsense type. Except cow Gail would run you over and I am certain human Gail would not.

These are also the same nearly due to calve cows that escaped on their first night here last year. Remember that story? Happy to report that since then they have only gone on one more adventure to our neighbours Hayla and Dougs. They ransacked their apple orchard. Thank God it was in winter and not during the apple harvest season. And our new baby was a few days old...ughhh.

Smart cows.

Not great for us, or Hayla and Doug.

So as you now know we do have a general idea of our cows due dates, as well as the early signs of oncoming labour, but the real fun is that we really have no idea when our newest calves will make their first appearance. With a new baby and a husband who works full time, it's not quite the wild west over here although it feels like we're inching pretty close.

Let's all cross our fingers for a seamless, easy calving season.

We will keep you posted on our newest babies and any new cow escapes.
